Support Global Artists, Not Corporate Factories

Ten Thousand Villages is one of the largest fair trade organizations in the world that offers jewelry, pottery, musical instruments, and lots more. It's a great gift giving site, because not only are the items beautiful and hand-crafted; each artist has a story you can share with the recipient--making it an instant heirloom in a global family kind of way!

Green Home Building Index

Some of you may be familiar with this site, but it offers a plethora of information regarding "green" housing construction. From Cob, to Straw Bale, Adobe, Rammed Earth and more. This web site has a bunch of information for those of us who are looking for an alternative to the standard structure offered in the construction market today. There are also do it yourself books that can be purchased and other links lead off of this site. I think it's worth looking into if you want to go "off the grid" or are looking for something environmentally sound.

WFMU

WFMU is a radio station out of New Jersey that has some swell items/downloads/videos...stuff on their website. Sometimes offensive but always entertaining. My favorite section is the Beware Of The Blog.

Build it Solar

This is the biggest and most comprehensive do it yourself alternative energy/green living site I have found. Tons of information and plans on how to do everything from converting to fluorescent bulbs to building your own solar house.
A staggering amount of hard to find information. This really appeals to the tinkerer/mad scientist/artist part of me

Project Gutenburg

Project Gutenburg is an ongoing project to make available books whose copyright has expired. The books are all online and free. All of the classics and many many works published prior to 1923 are on their website. they have over 20,000 books for download on their website and over 100,000 available through link partners.
A tip is to look around for the "bookshelves" that list books by genre,
I have been slowly working my way through the classic sci-fi bookshelf.

Blurb

www.blurb.com

This is a great website for an online publishing company that allows people to make their own print-on-demand books. You download an easy-to-use program to design your book with a variety of templates and formatting options and uplink the final product for publication. It's relatively inexpensive, ideal for text and/or photos, and additional copies remain available for later purchase. In our book, our photos were excellent, the binding was professional grade and the overall quality was great. Our 370 page book contains over 450 photos , cost approximately $60.00 plus shipping, and was sent to us a week after our final upload.

www.fark.com

Fark is a news/current events blog that lets submitters write there own title to the story they are posting. I get a kick out of some of the titles and they also have photoshop contests which are also interesting. Check it out...

Pandora

Pandora is an internet radio station that customizes itself to play your favorite music. Choose an artist or a song and pandora will find similar music and play it for you. Vote thumbs up/down to help it narrow down what you like. I like it because i get to listen to good music without having to play DJ and pick a CD or set up a play list
